The Ids were the first band that The Hive recorded to garner any label interest. They consisted of Sean MacDonald (Vocals, guitar, Keyboards, Percussion), Rick Brummer (Bass, Percussion and Keyboards) and Adrian Rout (Trumpet, Drums and Vocals.) Their sound was described as lo-fi-indie-pop cathartic anti-rock bliss folk-noir among other meaningless slogans that dont really tell you anything about the band unless you are part of the elitist circle that uses such phrases. Sure they were sloppy, messy and of course their ambition far exceed their musicianship but for a brief time they evoked a certain something that was truly vital and compelling. This 3 piece was briefly signed to Nettwerk Records and by all accounts they were the poorest selling artist to date on their roster. On a posh boutique of a label such as Nettwerk, The Ids stuck out like a blackhead on a home coming queens perfect cheekbones. They were recorded at Hive A (we are now in Hive E) with very little gear (one ADAT and 5 entry level mikes) but a lot of enthusiasm. Just as they were trying to find their voice we were learning how to use our new studio gear. We will miss those blissful days of naiveté when anything seemed possible. Looking back what well will miss most of all is Adrian Rout (playing solo as Chruth?), he was amazing multi-instrumentalist, a forthright, genuine, compassionate and sincere person. He was prematurely taken from us on February 27, 1999. The Hive is a richer creative environment because of him.
